Pasar Senen Station

Pasar Senen Station or known as Senen Station is the railway station located at the area of Pasar Senen Central Jakarta which is one of the oldest areas in Jakarta. The name 'Senen' was taken from the name of a market which was opened by Dutch colonial government in 1733 as a trading facility in the outskirts of the Weltevreden city which is now known as Gambir. The market was called Senen market because in the old days it was only open on Monday (Senin). At the ruling order of Governor General East Indische East Van der Parra, Senen Market was getting busy so that it was then operated every day. The busy activities of Pasar Senen attracted Chinese traders to conduct business and stayed in group forming a village. After independence until 1975, Senen was the central of trade in Jakarta city which was then more developed with the establishment of Senen Centre of Trading or Senen Project at the time of Governor Ali Sadikin (1960-1970) and in 1990 Senen Modern Super Blok Atrium.

The development of Pasar Senen areas needs supporting adequate transportation facilities, one of which is train which by Dutch colonial government had started been operated in 1887s.

1950 - Pasar Senen
Initially, Pasar Senen Station was only train temporary stopping area Batavia-Bekasi line which was opened in 1894 by Bataviasche Ooster Spoorweg Maatschappij (BOS). With the growth of time and the increase number of passengers, Pasar Senen Station was developed in 1916 by Staats Spoorwegen (SS) and was inaugurated on March 19, 1925. Building work of architect J. van Gendt symmetrical lengthen shaped with variation and emphasis on building dimension which is elevated at the hall as the general characteristic of Neo-Indische and as a transition to modern style. The influence of modern architecture showing from the series of lunette or top windows of the hall in square and order shaped in tune with curved doors underneath. Vernacular character is based on local climatic condition representing in the limas roof dominated by additional porch roof above entrance door to protect from rainy water as if two-storey building.

Today, Pasar Senen Station serves business and economy class passengers to various destinations in Central and East Java which then grouped into North and South Lines. To serve those lines, Senen Station has six railway tracks which are divided into three to west lines and three to east lines separated by long and open emplacement building with saddle roof in steel structure. Underground tunnel is used to connect west and east emplacement (main building) which is crossed under the railway track. Senen Station is continuously developed to accommodate the growing number of passengers resulted in the various additional improvement such as the additional canopy terrace at the main entrance, canopy at west emplacement, ticket sell at front area, and the improvement facilities at the waiting room of both emplacements.

The entrance door to the platform of north line service is in curve shaped based on Romanticism style. The use of tile represents clean impression to accommodate maintenance. The combination of white and grey is repeated at the floor and wall. The exposed console of corridor roof strengthens the character of the room.

Waiting room is facilitated by the series of fiber chairs. The use of white at walls, floors, and chairs provide clean impression. The room esthetic is located on lunette composition or glass window at the upper wall and ventilation in squared list frame.

The atmosphere of tunnel under the track connects west and east emplacement is a circulation facility for outgoing city passengers for the north lines trains. To minimize monotonous and dark impression color combination of white and light brown is used with dark brown list as destination signals.
West and east emplacement is divided into railway track lines one, two, and three which are used for outbond destination. Both emplacements are connected by tunnel under the track. The atmospheric condition of platform and lobby is seen at night. The exposed construction shows the tenacious of Pasar Senen Station building.
