“These results have exceeded my expectations,” Indonesia’s head coach Rahmad Darmawan said after the match. “However, playing with consistency is important, and we have to work on that.
Cambodia’s head coach Lee Tae Hoon, acknowledged that the host players had fielded players that were able to play much better than his team.
“This is our first match. We fought hard but, on the day, Indonesia played better. Most of our players are also still young and inexperienced, as they are from the Under-19 and Under-20 squads that have had no experience overseas. I believe they will improve,” said Lee.
Indonesia, which last won the gold in soccer at the biennial games in Manila in 1991, started the match aggressively, leaving no chance for the Cambodians to fight back. However, several attempts on goal by the red and white squad went awry without result.
In the 28th minute, the host team’s aggressiveness finally paid off when Titus Bonai notched the first goal through a perfect header after benefiting from a pass from Stevie Bonsapia on the left side of the Cambodian half.
Only a couple of minutes later, Patrick Wanggai’s beautiful left foot shot landed the ball inside the right corner of the Cambodian net, creating a confident 2-0 lead for Indonesia.
Gunawan Dwi Cahyo quickly headed a third goal from a rare chance at the mouth of Cambodia’s goal in the 35th minute, when the goalie failed to block a corner kick by Octovianus Maniani.
As if not satisfied with three goals, Patrick Wanggai headed Indonesia’s fourth goal in the 41st minute. The chance arrived after Octo Maniani’s attempted shot bounced and Octo made a quick long pass, which was executed perfectly by Patrick’s header in front of Cambodia’s net.
Cambodia had to defend well at the start of the second half, with goalkeeper Kurnia Meiga forced to make several saves.
Substitute Andik Vermansyah mounted the misery upon Cambodia, however, by adding a fifth goal for Indonesia in the 81st minute off a corner kick.
Three minutes later, substitute Ramdani Lestaluhu sealed the tally by scoring the last goal for Indonesia after a pass from Andik Vermansyah to complete the rout.
The victory puts the hosts at the top of Group A with three points, followed by defending champions Malaysia and Singapore which share one point each, after a draw between the two in an earlier match.
